Grade 4 Mathematics: Alberta Program of Studies

A 60-day Grade 4 mathematics learning path for students in Calgary. The sequence develops number sense and computational fluency first, then connects patterns and equations to geometry, measurement, data, and probability. Students apply mathematical reasoning to real-world contexts, communicate strategies, use tools appropriately, and demonstrate learning through ongoing formative assessment and a final integrated project.

Across approximately 15 days, students develop a strong understanding of whole numbers to 10,000 and use place value to read, represent, compare, and order numbers. They practise addition and subtraction strategies, including estimation and mental mathematics, and solve problems involving multiple operations. Students build multiplication fact fluency through 10 × 10 and connect multiplication to related division facts. They model and solve multiplication and division problems involving 2-digit and 3-digit numbers divided or multiplied by 1-digit numbers. The topic concludes with representing, comparing, and connecting common fractions and decimals using visual models, number lines, and real-life contexts such as money and measurement. Emphasis should be placed on explaining strategies, checking reasonableness, and selecting efficient methods rather than relying only on written algorithms.

Recommended Tasks
  • Create a place-value portfolio containing expanded notation, base-ten representations, number-line placements, and comparison statements for numbers up to 10,000.
  • Complete a grocery-store budgeting investigation in which students estimate totals, calculate exact costs, solve multiplication or division problems, and explain how they checked their answers.
  • Build a fraction-and-decimal number line from 0 to 1 using benchmark fractions such as 0, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1, then add equivalent decimal representations where appropriate.
