Students explore colour as an observable property of materials and investigate how colours can be created and changed. They identify and name common colours, recognize primary colours, and experiment with mixing colours to produce new colours. Students observe how colour appears in natural and human-made objects, record results using drawings and colour charts, and communicate patterns they notice. Learning emphasizes safe use of classroom materials, careful observation, prediction, comparison, and the understanding that different materials may change colour in different ways. Calgary examples may include prairie wildflowers, autumn leaves, colourful clothing, public art, and signs around the school community.
