A 60-day English Language Arts learning path for Grade 1 students in Calgary, aligned with the Alberta Program of Studies. During this 15-day opening unit, students establish routines for listening, speaking, collaborating and responding respectfully. They explore how oral language communicates ideas, feelings, questions and experiences. Students practise turn-taking, active listening, asking and answering relevant questions, retelling personal events in sequence and using descriptive vocabulary. Through read-alouds, songs, rhymes, drama and classroom conversations, they notice sounds, syllables, rhyming words, beginning and ending sounds and the relationship between spoken language and print. Students also learn to identify letters, distinguish upper- and lowercase forms, recognize their names and classmates’ names, and use classroom print and environmental text. The unit culminates in a collaboratively created class book or classroom community display that combines drawings, oral contributions and simple written language.
